Bodegas Trenza was founded by winemaker David Tofterup in 2004. Having traveled around the world gaining experiences with different grape varieties and different wineries, David wanted a project were no rules applied and where he would have the creative freedom with every wine he braided together. With the help of his family, the inspiration of his wife and the creative hand of his brother Jonas Tofterup MW, David and Bodegas Trenza has successfully braided together life experiences, quality enriched fruits and love into every bottle.

Trenza, translate into the English word braid. Trenza, refers to any object created by an interweaving of three or more separate strands different materials in a diagonally overlapping pattern. A braided item would be preferred over an individual strand because the braid creates a stronger, more complex, and unique item. Generally a braid is a braid, however, the colors, textures, materials and braiding style allows each braid to be uniquely beautiful.

Our collection of wines have been created by interweaving of and or highlighting different grape varieties as they thrive throughout Spain: the Monastrell (Mourvèdre), the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Syrah (Shiraz), the Tempranillo and the Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouchet). We also play with Viura, Verdejos and Sauvignon Blancs. Each of these grape varieties are recognized independently in the great World of wine for the unique characters that they bring to a bottle of wine, be it its purple, deep red or ruby colors, fruity characteristics, its savory touch or its amazing ability to age.

We believe that with the grapes we have chosen to braid together, we have taken the best characteristics that each variety has developed, and have created a strong Trenza with great personality, complexity, and uniqueness. A crafted Trenza that truly re?ects the fruit, the terroir and the great potential of Bodegas Trenza.

DAVID TOFTERUP

Born in the town of Esbjerg, Denmark in 1975. At the age of 15 he immigrated, with his family, to the Costa del Sol, Spain, and it was here that his interest in the Spanish language, culture, gastronomy and wine took form. Appreciation for quality wine and food has been a passion of David s ever since. His interest for wines, however, was not just limited to consuming it, but rather in the art and technique of making it. Moving back to Copenhagen on his own at the age of 18, he graduated from Niels Brock Copenhagen Business College in 1995. In 1998 he became a skilled wine cellar master and started out on his adventures traveling around the wine world.

He has worked as an assistant winemaker at prestigious and well-known wineries Worldwide, including Mont Marcal (Penedes, Spain), Chateau Lestage-Simon (Haut-Medoc, France), Viña Tarapacá (Maipo Valley, Chile), Foley Estates and Lincourt Vineyard (Santa Ynez Valley, California). For 17 years as Director of Winemaking at a large, well-respected Spanish wine producer in Spain, David was able grow his knowledge and deepen his respect for Spain as a world-class wine producer. Learning, exploring and experimenting within each new region he has found many hidden treasures around Spain from the oldest vineyards, to quality fruit and all of the possibilities with the up-and-coming producers.

He knows all the potential Spain has to offer, as he has been able to tap into all these resources to create internationally recognized and an award winning wine portfolio from various Spanish appellations. David, himself, has earned his own recognizing as an influential Spanish winemaker, having been awarded the prestigious title of Spanish Winemaker of the year, in 2016 and then again in 2018, by the UEC (Union Española de Catadores).

Now with energy and excitement David has gone back to his roots and is pouring his creativity, passion and knowledge in to Bodegas Trenza.

Bodegas Trenza was founded by David in 2006, together with his family with a goal to create boutique family shared and enjoyed wines. Bodegas Trenza started as a small wine collection from Yecla, which over the years has become one of the highest regarded wines from this small appellation. He has taken his philosophy and is now braiding together new wines focused on the old vine Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, a collection called Viña Curvada. Wines that are guaranteed to show his love and passion for winemaking. With time and renewed energy David is greatly looking forward to the future he has with Bodegas Trenza a pushing this boundaries of his creativity.
