Vineyards
The appellation has approximately 4.830 hectares (11,935 acres) planted with vines and stretches approximately 35km from north to south, and 25km from east to west. The region is divided up into two sub regions; Campo Abajo, to the south of the town of Yecla, and Campo Arriba, to the north Yecla is known for the locally grown Monastrell, which clones have during centuries naturally adapted the extreme weather conditions in this part of Spain.
We have, for this collection of Trenza, sourced the grapes from some of the oldest low yielding vineyards, planted on prime locations and with great exposure in Campo Arriba , 12km north of the town of Yecla. The vineyards are planted on poor limey, stony soil, at an altitude of 750 to 800 meters above sea level. The Monastell and Garnacha Tintorera grapes come from +50 year old head trained bush vines, yielding 1-1.5kg per vine. The Shiraz andCabernet Sauvignon come from 18-22 years, trellis trained vines which yield 1.5-2.5kg per vine Most of the Monastrell is dry farmed planted in en Vaso (low bush trained) with just 1500 vines/ha with huge spacing in order to have enough natural precipitation to for vines to survive. This results in one of the world lowest average yields, which is just under 15hl/ha.
